2. Lead and LBE cooled fast reactors

2.1. Characteristics of lead and LBE coolant

The lead and LBE (lead bismuth eutectic) are chemically stable and boiling point is much higher than sodium. They shift the void reactivity coefficient toward negative direction. These characteristics make safer fast reactor design possible. Furthermore excellent neutron confinement feature makes small long-life fast reactor possible. Small long-life reactors can be utilized in a separated island and/or remote site. They are also required for other utilizations of nuclear energy.
